EXPLORE
As we approach the beginning of the school year or the calendar year, we often discuss our goals and reflect on what has gone well in the past and what we could do differently in the future. However, these seasonal goals are often forgotten or abandoned all too quickly.
To truly empower and instill confidence in our students, we must make goal-setting and reflection an ongoing part of our routines. By sharing learning objectives, identifying strengths and weaknesses, and offering support, we can help our students achieve and celebrate their goals.
ADAPT
As instructors, we are also learners, and setting goals can be challenging. But, if we make goal-setting and reflection a part of our routine, we can achieve our goals for the class, semester, or year. Let's take some time out of our busy schedules to make this happen by setting aside a few moments to consider our recent course evaluations, student survey responses, or personal areas of improvement. Be specific with the goal and the time frame for achieving it.
INSPIRE
Ultimately, goal setting and reflection are key to improvement, regardless of your role. It’s less about achieving a final goal or destination and more about continuous improvement. As you intentionally work on your goal-setting, think about how relevant, actionable, and improvement-oriented the goals are and make adjustments along the way.
Let's make goal-setting and reflection a part of our daily routines to positively impact our motivation, self-efficacy, student engagement, and success.
