Similar to a holiday wish list, trends in higher education come and go. This week, we highlight some of the most significant and impactful items we’ve seen in our classrooms in 2023.
EXPLORE
The need for accessible online course materials has significantly increased this year as many students prefer online learning. Gen Z students who have grown up in the online world may have already completed part of their high school education online. Additionally, many mature learners are returning to upgrade their education while continuing to work, and online learning provides them the convenience of studying from home at their own pace.
ADAPT
Our syllabus now includes several collaborative projects. We've shifted our focus towards project-based work because most students will eventually work in an environment where they must complete projects independently or as part of a team. In such environments, "soft skills" such as collaboration, communication, and problem-solving become crucial to students' success. We’re embracing the ‘messy learning experiences’ that challenge students to experiment with ideas and learn from their mistakes.
INSPIRE
Effective communication is crucial. It's essential to connect with students through the communication channels they prefer. Both current and prospective students expect to communicate through various touch points such as voice, SMS, social media, and email. We've learned how to leverage our Learning Management System to ensure we cover all bases for engaging and retaining students through strong omnichannel communication.
With every new year come new education trends. Whether you’re an entry-level full-time instructor or part-time adjunct, keeping tabs on higher education trends and incorporating them into your classrooms can help your courses and students succeed this year and beyond.

Want Even More?
If your semester is anything like mine, you have an excellent plan for how to communicate with your students in the beginning. But by midterm rolls around, you might be buried under a pile of ungraded assignments and rushing to prepare for your classes.
We all want to give our students a better experience, run our classes more efficiently, and make sure they get something out of them, but each semester, these things depend on how we teach and what habits we maintain.
We created a flexible, yet powerful habit tracker to help you visualize scheduled interactions in online courses. Download a copy for FREE!
